Last week, a Santa Ana father of three was killed by a speeding vehicle as he was returning home from work. The accident happened around 7:30 in the evening on the 1800 block of Cedar Street. Police say the man, Jose Martinez, was standing on the driver’s side of his parked car when a speeding BMW struck him.
Police believe that street racing may have played a role in the crash and are looking for a second vehicle they say may have been involved.
“Witnesses say there were engines revving,” said Cpl. Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana PD.
At the Law Offices of Howard Kornberg, we know that reckless drivers cause far too many accidents in this state. We also know that speeding is only one cause of concern for pedestrians.
If you need a Santa Ana pedestrian accident attorney, you can count on our knowledgeable and experienced team to investigate your case and work to secure the compensation you deserve.
Vulnerable Pedestrians
There is no group more susceptible to injuries in and around the roadway than pedestrians. They have no protection against the force of a vehicle or other objects that hit them. We commonly see severe injuries as a result of pedestrian collisions. This can include spinal cord injuries, broken bones, internal organ damage, brain and head trauma, and more.
The medical expenses from fixing this damage can be extreme, especially if you need long-term rehabilitation. If an accident causes a long-term disability, the cost of care can become unmanageable.
How much of this will insurance cover?
There were over 14,000 pedestrian accident injuries in California in 2016, the latest reporting year for the state. Santa Ana saw 170 pedestrian injuries or fatalities for the year. Many of these happened because of driver negligence.
Like the case above, speeding and aggressive driving are major problems on our roadways. In fact, over 27 percent of Californians listed those two problems as their biggest safety concern for roadways.
We also know that drunk and distracted drivers are a major problem. Anything that impairs a driver’s ability to properly operate their vehicle makes them a danger. Whether it is alcohol or a cell phone, pedestrians will pay the price in a collision.
Tellingly, over 10 percent of drivers in the state admitted to driving after they have had too much to drink within the last six months. Ten percent of our population is too much.
