When you head out on a motorcycle, you know that there are more risks than if you were inside a regular passenger vehicle. Most motorcycle owners take steps to be safe on the roadway, but they cannot control the behaviors of other drivers around them. Even the best-training motorcyclists cannot stop accidents from occurring. We learned that recently when the Mayor of Inglewood was involved in a crash with an LAPD motorcycle officer.
If you need a motorcycle accident lawyer, the Law Offices of Howard Kornberg are here to help you secure the compensation you need in the aftermath of a crash.
This Incident Certainly Made The News
When the Mayor of Inglewood is involved in a crash that nearly kills an LAPD officer, the news is certainly going to be all over it. The incident happened at the end of April when Major John Butts, a former police chief, was making a left-hand turn into the entrance of USC.
The video is chilling. In it, you can see that the rear of his black SUV was clipped by a sedan in the oncoming lane. This sent the mayor’s vehicle spinning out of control and right into an unsuspecting LAPD motorcycle officer who ended up in a fountain.
Thankfully, the motorcycle officer was wearing a helmet and was not killed. Though he did sustain serious injuries, he is expected to make a full recovery.
These Incidents Are Serious
Motorcyclists cannot always control what happens around them. In most motorcycle crashes, there are going to be injuries. It is not uncommon for us to see the following injuries in the aftermath of a motorcycle crash:
- Spinal cord trauma/neck trauma
- Head injuries/traumatic brain injuries
- Internal organ damage or internal bleeding
- Broken or dislocated bones
- Severe lacerations or road rash
A motorcyclist has little protection against the force of a vehicle.
What causes these crashes?
Motorcyclists are susceptible to the same negligent driving behavior as anyone else on the roadway. For the latest reporting year in California, there were more than 14,400 motorcyclist injuries. Particularly dangerous for motorcyclists are drivers:
- Impaired by drugs or alcohol
- Who speeds or operate recklessly
- Distracted by phones, other devices, eating, etc.
When a negligent driver causes harm to a motorcyclist, the driver needs to be held accountable for injuries caused.
