It is about that time of year when the weather is consistently gorgeous, and people are choosing to walk instead of drive. California summers are hard to beat anywhere else. People are feeling the need to be more active and start enjoying the night air with a walk. Unfortunately, walking is not as safe as it once used to be. Our pedestrian accident lawyers at the Law Offices of Howard Kornberg represent clients who have suffered a severe personal injury caused by a negligent driver.
A fun evening turns into a nightmare when drivers are negligent and don’t look out for pedestrians. As a pedestrian, there is only so much you can do to protect yourself. You can cross at crosswalks, look both ways, and follow traffic signals, but if someone isn’t following the appropriate roadway rules, you may end up injured on the side of the road. This was the case for a woman who was injured in a hit and run.
DUI Turned Deadly
It was just after midnight on a Wednesday when a police officer noticed a woman’s body lying in the middle of the road. The police officer stopped his car to check out the body when he discovered the woman was unconscious and not breathing. It was very apparent that she was struck by a car and the driver committed a hit and run. An emergency medical team arrived and took the critically conditioned woman to the nearby hospital. Then he started the chase to find the driver who committed the crime.
Officers called around and searched for a vehicle with major front end damage. Thankfully someone found a car with the driver walking away from it as if to abandon the car. The driver was arrested and was said to be under the influence of some drug. The driver was a 38-year old man and was arrested for suspicion of DUI causing injury and hit and run which are felonies. Thankfully there was a video that showed the vehicle and the driver hitting the woman to support the police’s arrest.
What To Do With A Pedestrian Injury
Because people don’t walk around in armor, if you are hit by a car, your body absorbs all the energy of the hit. Depending how fast the driver hits you, contributes to the severity of the injury. Most injuries involve head trauma, broken bones, lacerations, neck, back, and/or spinal injury. Even if you are suffering from minor injuries, the amount of time needed to recover may take several weeks to years.
