Despite Los Angeles being part of the Vision Zero initiative, it seems like we hear about pedestrian and bicycle accident deaths every day. A recent crash that occurred in Los Angeles took the life of a 13-year-old boy. At the Law Offices of Howard Kornberg, our pedestrian accident attorney wants to discuss this case and highlight just how severe these incidents are for victims.
What Happened In This Pedestrian Crash?
On Tuesday, March 10, a 13-year-old boy was hit by a vehicle outside of The Accelerated Schools in the South Los Angeles area. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, firefighters responded to the 100 blocks of East Martin Luther King J. Boulevard early that morning.
They arrived to find bystanders performing CPR on the boy. However, despite the quick actions of those on the scene and the prompt emergency response, the boy died of cardiac arrest. The driver remained at the scene of the accident, and the cause of the crash is under investigation. Police have not yet released any further information about the identity of the child.
Pedestrian Accidents Are Often Severe
This pedestrian incident took the life of a young boy. Unfortunately, pedestrian accidents are not uncommon in the Los Angeles area or in California. Despite Vision Zero being implemented in this city, traffic deaths have continued to increase each year.
According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, there were approximately 15,000 pedestrian injuries and 811 pedestrian fatalities during the latest reporting year. Data has shown that nearly all reported pedestrian accidents resulted in some kind of injury. It is not uncommon for our Los Angeles pedestrian accident lawyers to help clients who have sustained the following:
- Spinal cord trauma (possible paralysis)
- Head injuries or traumatic brain injuries
- Internal organ damage or internal bleeding
- Broken or dislocated bones
- Severe lacerations or road rash
In many cases, victims of pedestrian accidents face long roads to recovery. A pedestrian accident victim may even be disabled and unable to return to work or to live their lives the way they have been accustomed to. Pedestrian accident victims often suffer from immense pain and suffering damages caused by their injuries. The costs of a pedestrian accident, both economic and non-economic, can be enormous.
