Typically when we hear about terrible dog attacks we go straight to Pit bulls or German Shepard. Our Los Angeles Dog Attack Attorneys at the Law Offices of Howard Craig Kornberg have represented victims of dog attacks for over 30 years. Our clients have ranged from small children to the elderly. We understand dog bite injuries are not only physically dangerous, but they can be mentally and emotionally traumatizing. Dog attacks are more frequent because dogs are becoming more domesticated and intertwined with our culture. Restaurants are promoting dog-friendly spaces to encourage owners to dine with their furry companions. It is a great marketing scheme, but not every dog is suited for the public and not every owner is ready to handle their unruly dog.

Basketball Celebrity Dog Bites

In June 2018, Piston’s Blake Griffin was enjoying eating out with his fur companion when the dog bit a fellow restaurant patron. The victim, Emmanuel Aframain, claims that the dog injured him to the point where he needed medical attention. He is filing a dog attack civil suit against Griffin to seek compensation for the medical bills, pain, suffering, and mental and emotional trauma. During discovery, it was noted that Griffin’s dog has a violent past.

There are rules and regulations for people who have dangerous pets. For example, if you have a dangerous dog you must enroll your pet as a dangerous animal within your community and pay an annual fee for the enrollment. You also have to obtain insurance for your animal in case they were to harm someone else. Last, you have to take extra precautions like keeping the dog in a strong enclosed space and keeping them on a lease. Because Griffin’s dog had a past, it is reasonable to expect that he would take necessary precautions. Aframain’s attorneys are suggesting that Griffin did not take the responsibility necessary for his dangerous animal.

Dog attacks are considered a strict liability. This means that the owners are always responsible for their dog’s behavior. However, that does not mean that a victim can sue the owner for everything. If the owner took all the steps necessary then the courts may rule in their favor. In looking at some of the facts from Griffin’s story, Aframain may have a case against Griffin.

What To Do

California is a dog-loving state, but the courts firmly believe that owners should take responsibility for their pets. Everyone should feel safe whether they are walking through a park, in their neighborhood, or in a restaurant. Choosing to bring your furry companion to a public place means that you are responsible for what your pet chooses to do. As with the victim of Griffin’s dog, sometimes that isn’t always the case.

If you or someone you love was injured due to a dog attack then you should seek legal assistance. Not only can our dog attack lawyers help you get compensation for your medical bills, but we can ensure that you get the mental and emotional help you need to get through this traumatic time.
