An E. coli outbreak that had caused a spate of illnesses across several states in recent weeks appears to have spread once more, with the number of affected consumers reaching 149. Reported cases of E. coli originating from Romaine lettuce have originated from as many as 29 separate states. 129 of the 149 individuals involved have been interviewed about their illness, with around one half of those who participated reporting that they had been hospitalized as a direct result. Between May 2 and May 9, 28 more people have fallen ill, with the outbreak reaching four additional states. It should also be noted that the most recent instances may not have been reported yet, meaning the total could be considerably higher.
As at May 9, seventeen of those affected had contracted a type of kidney failure, known as a hemolytic uremic syndrome, which is known to occur alongside an E. coli infection. One person has died due to contracting E. coli from Romaine lettuce. Although no details are available as yet, it has been stated that at least one affected consumer, or their family, has filed a lawsuit relating to the outbreak.
FDA advice remains unchanged, stating that Romaine lettuce should be avoided unless it can be proven beyond all doubt that it did not originate from the Yuma, Arizona area.

A wrongful death lawsuit can be brought by certain individuals, who are closely related to one who has died due to the negligence or wrongful actions of another person or entity. As well as ascertaining that you qualify to file for wrongful death compensation, your Los Angeles attorney will need to prove that:
- The death was caused by the accused party
- The death occurred as a direct result of the accused party’s negligence or wrongdoing
- The death brought monetary damages
- The death affected the surviving family members
If you have lost a close family member, and believe you may be eligible to file for wrongful death compensation, a Los Angeles attorney from Law Offices of Howard Kornberg could help maximize the monetary damages you recover.
