After a dog bites or attacks another animal, the most important thing to do is to seek medical attention. Even if the bite seems minor, failure to treat the wound could result in a serious infection.

Additionally, California law requires that you report the incident to the city or county authorities. To do so effectively, you need to have detailed information about the incident, including the date it occurred and location, the breed of dog or type of animal, the victim’s information, and the circumstances of the attack.

If it was a dog that attacked you or your loved one, it is also important to not only identify its breed but who owns the animal. If the animal was in control of someone other than the owner, take note of their information as well.

It is also important to photograph your injuries as soon as possible. If you need to remove the gauze or other bandaging, consult with a doctor or nurse regarding how to do it properly. Photograph all wounds, no matter how minor they seem. It also can be beneficial to photograph the scene of the attack as well as ripped and bloody clothing and other evidence.

In most circumstances, you also have a right to pursue a claim against the animal’s owner or other liable parties. An experienced dog attack attorney can guide you through the complex nature of these types of cases. The sooner you obtain legal representation, the sooner you can protect your right to compensation for medical bills and other damages.
