Ridesharing is something that has transformed the transportation industry, a merging of technology with traditional services that has been convenient for so many people. When you need to get to the store or home from a night out, you no longer have to worry about getting into your own vehicle.
Press a button on your phone and wait a few minutes for your ride to show up.
But are you sure the driver that shows up is the right one?
What if you have a driver who has scammed their way into an Uber account?
You may think that is not possible, but thanks to some good reporting, we now know there is a whole world of black market ridesharing account renting.
What Happens
We know you expect to be safe when you choose to take an Uber and we know you always check the driver’s name and car to make sure it matches what the app says.
The reporter in the story we found discovered that there is a way for anyone to get around Uber background checks and preliminary vehicle inspections. And they do it in a way that gives you no way to know a phony driver has shown up to give you a ride.
They do it through messaging apps and chatrooms where brokers sell Uber driver accounts. They can be rented or sold to phony drivers. Clients will set up accounts, depend on brokers to make a deal with renters, then transfer the money.
The reported actually rented an account to see how easy it was to do and it found it was a simple process. They accessed the rider accounts and contacted some people who got rides from the phony drivers. Many of the riders had no clue they had been duped, but one woman says her phony driver was reckless. She got out and walked the rest of the way.
Since the people who go through this process do not have background checks, it would be incredibly easy for someone with a criminal history to end up driving for Uber.
How would you like it if someone who has multiple DUI convictions ended up driving you around?
