What is wrong with Allergan textured breast implants?
The FDA recalled BIOCELL textured breast implants manufactured by Allergan in 2019. On June 1, 2020, Allergan launched a dedicated multi-channel campaign in an effort to contact patients who may not be aware of this recall.
This recall was necessary after research showed that those who have these implants have a higher risk of contracting breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).
BIA-ALCL is considered an extra-nodal T-cell lymphoma that develops in the fluid and scar tissue adjacent to the actual breast implants. Doctors and researchers have reported that this cancer will typically present as a seroma around 8 to 10 years after the initial placement of the implant. Doctors have said that anyone with Allergan BIOCELL textured breast implants should ask their doctors to be on the lookout for the following:
- A palpable mass
- A palpable lymphadenopathy
- Skin rash
- Fevers
- Capsular contracture
A 2016 study has shown that the overall three- and five-year survival rates for BIA-ALCL are 94% and 91%, but only if proper treatment is rendered. If cancer is detected and confirmed, the usual course of treatment is the removal of the breast implants.
