It’s unfortunate that dog attacks happen every day. Dogs are usually considered a man’s best friend. However, this isn’t always the case. You could be strolling through your neighborhood when your neighbor’s dog attacks you. Dogs can sometimes leave very brutal injuries. On top of that, you may have to incur more medical expenses or even be out of work due to the dog attack. One of the worst downfalls is that you may now be traumatized by dogs because of this incident. The type of dog that commits this act doesn’t even matter. Dogs typically labeled as aggressive could be extremely friendly. Dogs that are considered docile may be aggressive and attack you. It’s unfortunate when dogs act out and attack/bite you either purposely or unpurposely. It’s the dog owner’s responsibility to make sure their dog doesn’t attack others. In the case of a vicious dog that has attacked multiple people, there may even be repercussions for the dog. This is an incredibly scary situation to be in. In Maryland Heights, two cases of the same vicious dog attacking people have come up in the news.
May 2018 Attack
In May of 2018, a grandmother named Kim Barkley was a victim of a vicious dog attack. She claimed that the dog attacked her, leaving deep wounds on her arm, and jumped on her back. It was determined that Ronald Lezear, a police officer of the community as well as her grandchildren’s paternal grandfather, was the owner of the vicious dog. She filed a lawsuit against Lazear for $11,000 in medical expenses.
Recent Attack
Recently, another victim has come forward after seeing the story of the attack. Katie Higgins claimed that the same dog attacked her in 2012. She said she was helping out a neighbor with storm damage when the dog approached her and attacked. She claims that the dog first sniffed her then lunged at her and bit her. The dog attack left deep cuts and other long-lasting issues for Higgins. She was told by the owner, Lazear, that she would be compensated for her injuries. However, Lazear never paid out.
The Report
The same dog has left both of the victims with physical injury as well as emotional scarring from the attack. It traumatized the victims and truly impacted their lives. The judge recently reached a verdict on Barkley’s suit. Barkley filed a city ordinance violation against the dog owner. He was found guilty and fined $1000 for the incident. Barkley is unsatisfied with the verdict due to the fact that nothing was done to the vicious dog.
