A few weeks ago, a motorcyclist was struck and killed on the 110 Freeway in South LA. The driver of the white box truck that struck the cyclist then fled the scene.
“He actually drove away from the scene with the motorcycle attached and the motorcycle was found a couple of hundred yards away,” said a police sergeant.
Police are also investigating the possibility that the motorcyclist was struck by another vehicle after he was thrown from his motorcycle.
Motorcyclists face so many dangers on our roadways and many of those dangers revolve around negligent drivers. While we do not know for sure what caused the accident discussed above, we know to want to take some time to point out what can happen on the roadways.

The Numbers
California has more registered motorcycles, nearly 900,000, than any other state in the nation. This is a beautiful place to ride and many motorcyclists agree. Unfortunately, there are far too many preventable accidents that cause motorcyclists harm.
For the latest reporting year in the state, there were 14,418 motorcyclist injuries and 548 motorcyclist fatalities in collisions.
Motorcyclists face so many dangers and are especially vulnerable because they have almost no protection against the force of a vehicle. They have no metal frame around them and no airbags to cushion an impact.
Even if a motorcycle rider is wearing a helmet, they can still experience severe injuries.
Why They Happen
In many cases, like the one above, motorcycle accidents happen because other drivers tend to ignore motorcyclists. Many do not want to share the road and refuse to treat a motorcycle as a regular vehicle.
Other times, distracted drivers do not see a motorcyclist until it is too late. Any time a driver takes their eyes off the roadway, they could cause an accident.
Drunk drivers are a problem for everyone on and around the roadway and motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable to their reckless behavior.
There are times when the roadways themselves pose a problem for a motorcycle rider. If agencies responsible for maintaining the roads fail to do their jobs, motorcyclists could end up getting hurt.
