For pedestrians, the Auto Insurance Center recently determined that no county in the nation is as dangerous as Los Angeles County. According to a report they compiled, there were more motor vehicle accidents resulting in the death of a pedestrian in that county than anywhere else in the United States.
The AIC got their data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the stats were from 2014. There were a total of 218 pedestrian deaths in LA County alone.
Not only is that the highest, but it took the top spot by quite a bit. The second county on the list was Maricopa, Arizona, where you’ll find the city of Phoenix. There were only 94 deaths there in 2014, less than half of the total in Los Angeles. Houston’s Harris County clocked in one lower, with 93. South of LA, San Diego was fourth on the list, compiling 84 deadly incidents, and Miami came in fifth, with a total of 82.
As you can see, Los Angeles is an outlier even when looking at the deadliest places in the United States. It’s also an outsider if you look at other counties in Southern California, with its exceptionally high total, but it is worth noting that three of the six deadliest counties are in So Cal. The sixth on the list was San Bernardino, which saw 66 fatalities. At 14th, Riverside checked in with 51 more.
Areas that get a lot of foot traffic all year round are going to see higher crash rates involving pedestrians, so people in LA need to know their rights if they’re hit and injured or if a loved one is killed. Compensation could be needed for a host of costs, such as medical bills, funeral costs, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more.
