The collision happened at the intersection of First and Townsend streets. When police arrived, they found the victim in the roadway.
“The pedestrian was initially found to have a faint pulse and shallow breathing before all signs of life ceased,” the police department said in a news release. Officers performed CPR until OC Fire Authority paramedics took over. The victim was taken to the hospital and was in extremely critical condition.
The driver who struck the man in the wheelchair fled the scene and, as of this writing, has not been apprehended.
