What is going on with the Allergan breast implants?
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued a recall for textured breast implants manufactured by Allergan. In their statement, the FDA says that the recall was issued “To protect individuals from the increased risk of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), associated with Allergan BIO CELL textured breast implant.”
The FDA says that the overall incidence of cancer seems to be low, but that the evidence indicated that this specific product appeared to be directly linked to significant patient harm and even death.
We want to point out that the type of cancer these implants allegedly cause is not breast cancer. BIA-ALCL is a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Since the FDA issued a report in February about these implants, there have been 116 new cases of this cancer and 24 deaths.
According to NPR, there have been 573 confirmed cases of BIA-ALCL and 33 deaths worldwide, with 481 cases attributed to Allergan implants. The link between textured breast implants and cancer was first reported by the FDA in 2011.
In the US last year, approximately 314,000 people received breast implants. While textured implants are more popular in Asia and Europe, there are still cases of this cancer in the country.
Allergan textured breast implants will no longer be used. Right now, the FDA does not recommend that those who have these implants have them removed unless they are showing signs and symptoms concerning their doctor or have been diagnosed with cancer. This cancer is usually treatable when the implants are removed from the body.
