We face plenty of risks when we get behind the wheel of our vehicles each day. While most people do what they can to drive safely, we cannot control the actions of those around us. There are times when someone else’s negligent actions cause serious injuries. At the Law Offices of Howard Kornberg, our Los Angeles car accident attorneys are ready to get to work on your case and secure the compensation you need. Today, we want to discuss a recent crash that took the life of a local 21-year-old woman.
This case was allegedly caused by a drunk driver
We want to talk about a crash that happened on Aug. 18 at around 2:40 a.m. Police say that the driver of a 1999 Lincoln sedan lost control of his vehicle and spun to the left of Pacific Coast Highway. His car crossed into traffic going the opposite direction and struck a Cadillac being driven by a 49-year-old woman.
Police arrived to find a passenger in the Cadillac trapped inside the vehicle. She was extracted by the Long Beach Fire Department and taken to the hospital. She later died from her injuries. The driver of the Cadillac was also extracted and taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The driver of the Lincoln also sustained minor injuries. He was found to be intoxicated and arrested on charges including driving under the influence of alcohol and vehicular manslaughter.
This happens more than it should
We all know that a car accident happens. According to statistics from the California Office of Traffic Safety, there were 273,069 total injuries and 3,602 total fatalities due to traffic crashes during the latest reporting year.
If we look a bit closer at those numbers, we can see that impaired drivers were responsible for 31% of the total traffic fatalities that year and more than 14,000 injuries. Crashes involving impaired drivers are much more likely to cause serious injuries. It is not uncommon for our personal injury attorneys to see the following:
- Spinal cord injuries
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Bone fractures and dislocations
- Loss of or damage to a bodily organ
- Dismemberment or amputation
- Other injuries that inhibit a person’s daily activities
- Significant disfigurement
