Anyone who lives in and around the LA metropolitan area understands that pedestrians face enormous risk on the roadways, and not usually due to their own behavior. Negligent drivers are a plague for those who walk and jog in and around the roadway. We are learning that an 81-year-old man was recently killed in a hit-and-run crash in nearby Torrance.
If you need a pedestrian accident lawyer, the Law Offices of Howard Kornberg are standing by. We will work tirelessly to secure the compensation you need for all of your crash-related expenses.
What Happened Here?
In this story, we are learning that the 81-year-old man who was struck was walking home from his nightly prayer service. His name was Ghulam Ali Khimani and he lived just across the street from his local mosque.
Police reports say that Khimani was crossing the street inside a legal pedestrian crosswalk when he was struck by a vehicle. The driver fled the scene after the crash.
Khimani was treated at the scene, but his injuries were too severe.
This Is Common
All too often, pedestrians are struck and either injured or killed by hit-and-run drivers. Why do the drivers flee the scene?
We can only speculate that it is likely they are driving illegally. Perhaps they are impaired. Maybe they are distracted by their phones or driving on a suspended license.
For the latest reporting year in California, we know that there were over 14,000 pedestrian injuries across the state. When a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle, they are almost always injured or killed. There is simply no way for a human body to protect itself from the force of two impacts – one with a vehicle and one with the ground. We commonly see the following injuries after pedestrian crashes:
- Spinal cord injuries (with possible paralysis)
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Internal organ damage/internal bleeding
- Broken or dislocated bones
- Severe lacerations or amputations
Each of these injuries requires immediate medical care and, more often than not, long periods of rehabilitation. In some cases, a pedestrian crash victim is permanently disabled. The victim and their families often end up in financial jeopardy from a combination of medical debt and from income loss due to a victim not being able to work.
