Barry Weiss, star of the long-running reality TV series “Storage Wars,” was involved in a serious motorcycle crash on Wednesday in Los Feliz. The accident, which occurred around 2:30 p.m. left Weiss and a friend traveling with him on the motorcycle hospitalized with their injuries. Weiss fell victim to a common peril faced by motorcyclists across Los Angeles and elsewhere—he crashed into the back of a car that was pulling out from a parking space. Weiss’ friend, who is unnamed, reported that the car “pulled out directly in front of us and took our road away.”
Weiss was transported to a local hospital with his injuries, which included a significant chest injury, broken bones, and other internal injuries. He was placed in ICU and remains there, notes TMZ. Weiss’ friend added that he received “only a broken knee, elbow, and wrist.”
It is this poor visibility of motorcycles on the roadway that leads to many devastating motorcycle accidents. If you have been injured in an accident while driving or riding a motorcycle, then you need to reach out to our motorcycle accident lawyers now to preserve your right to collect compensation for your injuries.
Common Perils for Motorcyclists
Motorcyclists are not protected on the roadway in the way that they would be in the caged-in environment of a car or other vehicle. For this reason, motorcyclists are up to 27 times more likely to die during a crash than drivers or occupants of a standard passenger vehicle. A large number of motorcycle accidents are not due to driver error but the conditions of the road on which the motorcycle travels and the actions of other drivers on the road. The most common include:
- Other vehicles changing lanes, ultimately colliding with the motorcyclist
- Tailgating the motorcyclist, resulting in rear-end collisions
- Driver inattention, including texting while driving, resulting in collisions
- Drivers failing to see motorcyclists making their way through intersections
- Drivers not seeing motorcyclists turning left on green
- Drivers pulling out in front of motorcycles from parking lots, driveways, and side streets
When drivers fail to follow the traffic laws that are put into place to keep everyone safe, then they may find themselves liable for any injuries that result from their carelessness and negligence. This may include property damage, bodily injury, and even death. Injured motorcyclists can file a claim for their medical bills, physical therapy and rehabilitation costs, lost income, future wage loss, cost of any medical equipment, and pain and suffering.
